How does a EU citizen get a Tax Identification Number (AFM) in Greece?
Welcome to Greece! To obtain a Tax Identification Number (AFM) if you are a citizen of a European Union country, follow these steps:
1. Visit the Tax Office (DOY): You need to visit the Public Financial Service (DOY) of your residential area. If you are unsure which DOY is responsible, you can find it through the website of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).
2. Required Documents:
- Passport or National ID: A valid passport or national ID card from your country.
- Proof of Residential Address: A document proving your current residential address in Greece, such as a utility bill (electricity, water, telephone), rental agreement, or a certificate of hospitality.
- Certificate of Registration for EU Citizens: If you have been residing in Greece for more than three months, you need the certificate of registration for European Union citizens from the local Aliens Police Department.
- Completed M1 Form: This form is available at the DOY or on the AADE website.
3. Procedure:
- Go to the DOY with all the above documents
- Submit the documents and the completed form to the responsible employee.
- After checking the documents, you will be issued your AFM.
It's a good idea to contact the DOY in advance, as they may have specific hours for issuing AFM or require an appointment.
